  • $10 Meal Price is for members only.
    (Lunch will be provided at no cost for first time guests - after first visit meal price is $15)

Topic: Diversity in the Workplace – The Facts About the LGBTQ Community


Speaker: Ashley McErlean, LMFT-A and Penny Miller, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, CEBS


Summary Description: A diverse workforce has many components. In this presentation, we'll be discussing the LGBTQ community, highlighting terminology, issues of discrimination and how to make the workplace more inclusive for this segment of our community.


Learning Objectives: 

  • Understand the terminology associated with the LGBTQ community
  • Know various issues relating to discrimination against LGBTQ individuals in the workplace, to include the current EEOC position
  • Develop a better understanding of gender and how gender stereotypes affect the employee and workplace
  • Take way ideas for a more inclusive workplace

Bio: Ashley McErlean, LMFT-A

Ashley McErlean is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate in private practice, specializing with the LGBTQ community. In 2017, she founded The Opal Center, which is a local LGBTQ resource center serving the Texoma area. The mission of The Opal Center is to provide free counseling, support, legal, and medical services to the LGBTQ community, and to educate the public and professional organizations on the challenges faced by this population, and to promote LGBTQ-affirmative practices and attitudes. 

Bio: Penny Miller, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, CEBS

Penny Miller made her way into the HR field via the U.S. Air Force, after getting her bachelor's degree in biology from Purdue University.  She 'retired" after 21 years in the military, closing out her career at Sheppard AFB as the Commander, 86th Mission Support Squadron (Basically, the HR person for the base). She was an executive recruiter for the construction industry before becoming the Director of HR and later CO-COO at a large multi-specialty clinic. She currently owns My HR Department, an HR consulting/outsourcing company, based in Wichita Falls.

Penny has a master's degree in management and is certified as an SPHR, SHRM-SP and CEBS.
