Dr. Jeff Stambaugh

Dean, Associate Professor for Midwestern State University

“Strategic Leadership” 

Jeff Stambaugh graduated in 1981 with a BS in aeronautical engineering from the US Air Force Academy.  He then served 24 years as a fighter pilot, commanding units at various levels and accumulating over 3,000 hours of flight time in the A-10, AT-38, and F-16 aircraft.   As a commander he supervised thousands of personnel and billions of dollars in assets.  He served four times on major headquarters’ staffs and had extensive international experience.   After retiring, Stambaugh began a second career as an academic.

Upon completion of his PhD at Texas Tech University in 2008, Stambaugh joined Midwestern State University and built an entrepreneurship program as the Director of the Munir Abdul Lalani Center for Entrepreneurship and Free Enterprise.  In 2015 he became the Director of the new Dillard Center for Energy Management.  He also became the dean of the Dillard College of Business Administration in 2017. He teaches entrepreneurship, strategy, and energy courses. 

Midwestern's very own Dr. Stambaugh will be using real life examples from other organizations to show the ways that HR Professionals and Management can shape and lead a company through Strategic Leadership. Other speaking points include:

John W. Ater II

Veterans Employer Liaison for the Texas Veterans Commission

“Are you a Veteran Friendly Employer?”

John Ater is a Veterans Employer Liaison for the Texas Veterans Commission, where he advocates the hiring of veterans to employers.  He works in conjunction with Workforce Solutions North Texas, Texas Workforce Commission and the Department of Labor to assist employers.

He retired from Active Duty as a Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force in February 2013 after 20 years of service (1992-2013).  During this time, John served in Security Forces as a Law Enforcement Patrolman, Military Working Dog Handler/Training, Flight Chief, and Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge (NCOIC) of the Military Working Dog Hub.  He served in five different countries including Iceland, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq and four different states. He had the honor of providing security for U.S. Presidents G.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama as well others in their administrations and family members.

John graduated from Midwestern State University with a BS in Business Administration, with a minor in Management Information Systems. He also graduated from the Community College of the Air Force with an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice.

Sherry Johnson

Field Services Director for SHRM

"The Future of HR: Promoting Business Success in a Changing Global Workplace"

Sherry has worked in the HR profession for more than 20 years with industry experience in not-for-profit community organizations, public education, and entrepreneurial experience as owner of a small business. Prior to joining SHRM as a staff member, in 2009, she served as president for her local SHRM affiliated chapter and she held a seat on the Texas SHRM State Council.

Sherry is an active community volunteer. She has served on her local district school board of trustees; she participated on a legislative advocacy group, working with state legislators to address educational issues affecting public school districts in Texas; and, for several years she served as the volunteer coordinator for the regional Special Olympics track meet. 

Sherry holds a bachelor's degree in Business Management; and, she is currently working on her MBA through Tarleton State University. She received her Senior Certified Professional in Human Resources (SHRM-SCP) designation from the Society for Human Resource Management; and, she earned her Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential from the ASAE Certified Association Executive Commission. She is a graduate of the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Leadership Program, earning Master Trustee designation.  

As an HR professional, you can play a significant role in promoting the success of your organization by understanding your business objectives and the changing environment – nationally and globally – in which you compete.
